How this calculator works
Social Security does not pay everyone on the same day. Since 1997, most new beneficiaries have been paid on a Wednesday chosen by their birthday, while some longer-term and SSI recipients follow fixed calendar dates. This tool asks a few simple questions and then lists your 12 payment dates for 2027, using the published schedule in SSA Publication 05-10031.
The inputs. You enter the day of the month you were born (1 to 31), whether you started benefits before May 1997, whether you get both Social Security and SSI, and whether you receive SSI only. If you get benefits on someone else's record, such as a spouse or survivor benefit, the birthday that counts is the worker's, not yours.
The rules the tool applies.
- Born on the 1st to 10th: paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
- Born on the 11th to 20th: paid on the third Wednesday.
- Born on the 21st to 31st: paid on the fourth Wednesday.
- Started benefits before May 1997, or get both Social Security and SSI: Social Security is paid on the 3rd of the month.
- SSI is paid on the 1st of the month.
- If a date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment goes out on the business day before.
No 2027 Wednesday payment falls on a holiday; the fixed-date groups shift more often.

Worked example. Margaret was born on the 15th and claimed retirement benefits in 2018. Fifteen falls in the 11th-to-20th group, so she is paid on the third Wednesday. Her 2027 dates are January 20, February 17, March 17, and so on through December 15. Her January payment is the first to include the 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, which you can estimate with our COLA calculator.
A person who gets SSI only sees a different pattern. Because the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday in several months, SSI has no deposit dated in January, May or August 2027, and two deposits in April, July and December (the December 30, 2027 payment is January 2028's money). These are not extra payments, just early ones, so it helps to budget for them. Our 2027 payment schedule guide explains each shift.
Limits of this estimate. The dates come from SSA's published 2027 schedule, but individual cases can differ, for example if a payment is delayed, sent by paper check or held while SSA reviews your record. Your own award letter and your my Social Security account are the final word on your payment date.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my SSI arrive on April 30 instead of May 1?
May 1, 2027 falls on a Saturday, so SSA sends the May payment on the business day before. The April 30 deposit is your May SSI, not a bonus, so it has to last until the June 1 payment.
I get benefits on my spouse's record. Whose birthday sets my date?
The birthday of the worker whose record you are paid on. If your spouse was born on the 25th, for example, your spousal benefit is paid on the fourth Wednesday.
Can I change my payment date?
Generally no. The date is set by the rules above. The main exception is when your situation changes, such as starting to receive both SSI and Social Security, which moves your Social Security payment to the 3rd of the month.
What should I do if my payment does not arrive?
First check the date against the table above, since weekend and holiday shifts catch many people out. Banks can also take a little time to post deposits. If the payment is still missing after a few business days, contact SSA or your local office so they can trace it.
